Asquith Xavier honoured with Blue Plaque at Notting Hill home

A Blue Plaque was unveiled on 15 August 2026 at the Notting Hill home of Asquith Xavier, the railway guard who ended Euston Station’s racial colour bar in 1966. The ceremony marked 60 years since Xavier began work at Euston, a move that forced British Railways to abandon its policy of excluding non-white staff from public-facing roles.

Xavier, who arrived in London from Dominica in 1958, had worked as a porter at Marylebone Station before being promoted to guard. When he applied for a transfer to Euston in 1966, staff representatives blocked his move, stating they would not accept "coloured staff" in roles that involved direct contact with passengers. Londonist reported the decision at the time.

A refusal, a reversal, and a public stand

Xavier challenged the decision with the help of a union representative. The case gained national attention, and British Railways reversed its position. On 15 August 1966, Xavier started work at Euston, becoming the station’s first Black guard. He was awarded two months’ backdated pay.

British Railways announced that future job opportunities in London would no longer be restricted on racial grounds. The decision did not end discrimination, Xavier later received anonymous abusive letters, but it removed a formal barrier. He died in 1980.

Recognition six decades later

In 2023, Avanti West Coast named a Pendolino train after Xavier. Three years later, English Heritage installed a Blue Plaque at his former home on Ledbury Road. Howard Spencer, a senior historian at English Heritage, said Xavier’s story showed how ordinary people could drive change.

His fight began with a simple desire for a fair opportunity to support his family, but it became a landmark moment in Britain’s struggle against workplace discrimination.

Xavier’s daughter, Sandra St John, told Londonist in 2023 that her father acted out of compassion. "Whatever he did, he did it for compassion," she said. "Because he cared about people."

What happens next

The Blue Plaque at 168 Ledbury Road is now a permanent public marker. English Heritage has not announced further events linked to the unveiling. The plaque is accessible at all times.
