London Transport Museum Acton Depot opens for public visits

The London Transport Museum is opening its Acton storage depot to the public for three days in September 2026. The event, running from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th September, will offer visitors a chance to see items from the museum's extensive collection that are not usually on display.

The Acton depot, located near Acton Town tube station, serves as the primary storage facility for the London Transport Museum. It houses more than 320,000 objects. This year's open days will highlight the distinctive visual identity of London's transport network. The theme will explore elements such as the iconic Tube roundel, the Underground map, moquette seating fabrics, and a large collection of historic publicity posters.

Visitors will have the opportunity to board historic Underground trains, including the 1927 Standard Stock and 1938 Stock. They can also view RM1 and RM2 Routemaster buses. The depot also contains collections of signalling equipment, station architecture, maps, models, signs, and transport artwork. Work on the restoration of the museum’s Q Stock Underground carriages will also be visible.

London Overground services suspended near Clapham Junction on Sunday

Engineering works will close lines between Wandsworth Road and Clapham Junction for the entire day.

A programme of short talks is scheduled throughout the weekend. These will include introductions to the depot, demonstrations by the museum’s signalling volunteers, and a brief history of the London Underground. The depot is a short walk from Acton Town tube station, which is served by the District and Piccadilly lines. At the time of reporting, no engineering works were scheduled to affect the station.

Ticket information

Tickets for the open days are priced at £19 for adults and £10 for children. Children aged three and under are admitted free of charge. Tickets are available for purchase through the London Transport Museum's website.
