A rare 1899 Mercedes-Benz combination delivery vehicle, known as the Ideal Van, will be on public display in central London on Saturday 31 October. The vehicle will be shown on Pall Mall as part of the St James’s Motoring Spectacle, a large exhibition of vintage and sports cars.

The Ideal Van, now part of the Mercedes-Benz Classic collection, represents an early example of a vehicle designed for commercial transport. It is based on a Benz Velo chassis and was reconstructed by Mercedes’ craftsmen. The van was originally capable of carrying approximately 100kg of goods and was powered by a 3hp engine.

Adding to its connection with the capital, the Ideal Van was constructed under licence by Hewetson’s, the official Benz representative in the United Kingdom at the time. The vehicle’s body could also be detached, allowing the chassis to be used as a two-person car, demonstrating its early dual-purpose design.

Following its display, the 1899 Mercedes-Benz will take part in the 2026 RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. The event is scheduled to depart from Hyde Park starting at 6am on Sunday 1 November. This year’s run commemorates the 130th anniversary of the 1896 Emancipation Run, which followed the passing of the Locomotives on Highways Act. This legislation removed the previous 4mph speed limit for motor cars, significantly influencing the development of motoring in Britain.

Duncan Wiltshire, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club, stated that the sight of the Ideal Van travelling the historic route would be a fitting celebration of the pioneering spirit behind both the Emancipation Run and the evolution of the motor vehicle. The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run traditionally features hundreds of cars built before 1905 travelling the 60-mile route to the Sussex coast.
