Community and not-for-profit groups in Barnet can apply for grants of up to £10,000 to fund walking and cycling projects. Transport for London opened applications for the Walking and Cycling Grants London programme on 1 August. The deadline for submissions is 28 September.

The programme is funded by Transport for London and the London Marathon Foundation. Groundwork London manages the grants. Since 2015, the scheme has supported over 100,000 Londoners through more than 500 projects across 32 boroughs and the City of London.

What the grants fund

Grants support projects that help people overcome barriers to walking and cycling. Past initiatives in London have included rides for children with disabilities, cycling and bike repair classes, and walking groups that address isolation and mental health. Last year, 185 projects received funding.

Organisations can also apply for Community Ideas Grants of up to £5,000. These grants help groups replicate successful projects already delivered elsewhere in London. A Community Ideas Hub provides examples of proven projects that applicants can adapt for their own neighbourhoods.

Support for applicants

Transport for London provides support throughout the application process. Successful groups receive further assistance during project delivery. Applications for both grants must be submitted online at wcgl.london by 28 September.

Broader active travel initiatives

The grants programme is part of Transport for London’s wider efforts to promote active travel. The TfL Go app offers up-to-date walking and cycling maps. Cycle Sundays provide guided rides for new or returning cyclists. London’s Cycleway network has now reached 450 kilometres.

The Mayor and I are committed to creating a London where walking and cycling are accessible, inclusive and enjoyable options for everyone. These projects are already having an incredible impact in communities across the city but we want even more Londoners to benefit.

Will Norman, London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner

London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman, said the grants help community groups break down barriers to active travel. Mike Diaper, group funding and impact director at the London Marathon Foundation, said the funding could help thousands more people become physically active and improve their health.

Ben Coles, director of development and strategic programmes at Groundwork London, said the grants provide solutions for better health, inclusion, skills and opportunity. Ros Daniels, director of London and South East at Canal & River Trust, highlighted a community walking initiative along the Grand Union Canal that has involved more than 85 people in over 30 walks.

What happens next

Barnet groups have until 28 September to submit applications. Transport for London has not announced when successful applicants will be notified. The programme will continue to support projects over the next three years.
